The Country Liberal Party team in Alice Springs is calling on the Chief Minister to promote the town as the logical choice for an AFL Hub, in response to AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan.
Araluen candidate, Damien Ryan, Namatjira candidate, Bill Yan and Josh Burgoyne, candidate for Braitling want Alice Springs as the Northern Territory’s home of the AFL for the 2020 season. “The benefits for Alice Springs, the AFL, the players and fans are enormous,” Damien Ryan said. “Alice Springs’ facilities are first class. We have two quality grounds and the AFL is familiar with what’s available from previous matches that have been played here,” Bill Yan said. “The season in Central Australia would be closer to what players are used to in southern states, more so than in the Top-End, making acclimatisation easier,” Josh Burgoyne said. The CLP Alice Springs team is confident the facilities required are available and secure, to ensure that COVID-19 quarantine regulations are adhered to. Local hotels such as the Crown Plaza Alice Springs Lasseters are currently vacant. With the loss of business and the majority of staff having lost their jobs, this could get them back to work. This facility for example could accommodate players and associated staff securely. Transportation to and from the ovals is also available in a secure way. Most importantly having the AFL in Alice Springs would serve as a lifeline for many struggling businesses that have been hurt because of the downturn in the economy and tourism. The CLP Alice Springs team calls on the Chief Minister to remember where Alice Springs is and lobby to support the town. Alice Springs is the logical choice. Ends. Media Contact 0458 773 619 |
