Gunner Government must Scrap Quarantine Weak Link 14 January 2021
Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gerard Maley, is calling for the Chief Minister to justify why he’s still allowing hotel quarantine – identified as one of the weakest links in the quarantine program – to continue in Darwin’s CBD.
“The Chief Minister needs be up front with Territorians and explain why he has authorised alternative quarantine arrangements at hotels in the centre of Darwin instead of the designated Howard Springs facility.
“Howard Springs has been identified to accept the bulk of repatriated Australians, and is much more secure than alternative quarantine accommodation. So, why are exemptions being granted to ADF personnel to quarantine in Darwin CBD, where the risk of community transmission is increased? “The Gunner Government also received an additional funding boost from the Feds to ensure Howards Springs is adequately resourced. This should be sufficient to ensure ADF personnel can be housed at the same facility.
“The fact that two people have now tested positive for COVID-19 while in hotel quarantine should be sounding alarms balls for the Gunner Government. The safest place for international arrivals is at Howard Springs,” said Mr Maley. ENDS
