Payroll tax and power relief now overdue
The Country Liberal Party reiterates its call for the Labor Government to immediately implement payroll tax and power relief for Territory businesses struggling with the COVID-19 crisis, Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said today. “Last week I called on the Labor Government to consider waiving and refunding payroll tax for the 2019- 20 financial year as well as look at relief into next financial year. I also called for the Government to consider deferring or waiving power and water charges on businesses and households, particularly for those who are struggling,” Mrs Finocchiaro said. “I know the Labor Government is acting to help businesses and families during these tough times, which is commendable and necessary, but until we properly address the biggest costs for businesses, it is likely we will see more and more close. This means more employees will be put out of work and more pressure will be on Government to provide support. Every day counts and now more than ever we need to keep people employed. “Refunding payroll tax for this financial year will inject immediate cash flow for small and medium businesses. This means people can stay employed, suppliers can be paid and other basic costs covered. “Waiving payroll tax debt for this financial year will relieve some pressure for those who are fighting to keep their businesses afloat. Add the waiver of power costs and you have a recipe for survival rather than shut-down. “Other jurisdictions are moving fast on payroll tax and other direct relief measures, recognising the impact. I ask the Chief Minister again, please don’t let Territory businesses close while we wait to hear your plans for payroll tax and power,” Mrs Finocchiaro concluded. ENDS |
