CLP calls for relief on payroll tax, power and water charges
The Country Liberal Party is calling on the Territory Labor Government to consider waiving payroll tax for the 2019-20 financial year as well as deferring payroll tax into the next financial year, to help relieve pressures on Territory businesses.
There is also scope for the Government to consider deferring or waiving power and water charges on businesses and households.
The NT’s small and medium sized businesses are struggling to deal with the COVID-19 crisis and need as much support as possible to stay afloat, Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said today.
“By refunding payroll tax for this financial year it will create immediate cash flow for small and medium businesses which will help keep people employed,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
“Any power and water bill relief should first target vulnerable people and those who have lost their jobs.
“Payroll tax is a tax on jobs and now more than ever the Territory needs people working and businesses to stay afloat. Further payroll tax relief is an effective way to allow businesses to keep the economy moving as is action on power and water costs.
“The Government really needs to be agile and respond quickly to do what it takes to support people and jobs.
“I’d like the Chief Minister to put everything on the table for consideration. These are extraordinary times and we shouldn’t be afraid to do what it takes to keep as many Territory businesses alive as possible,” Mrs Finocchiaro concluded.
