ABOUT STEVE:
I moved to the Northern Territory in July 1988 to join the Northern Territory Police Force and during a diverse career which has included employment with the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government I have lived and worked in Darwin, Alice Springs, Yulara, Ali Curung, Tennant Creek, Elliott, Borroloola, Beswick and Barunga.
Married to Nicci for 27 years, we have four adult children with two living in Tennant Creek employed as a Nurse and an Apprentice Electrician.
As the former Mayor of the Barkly Regional Council, I am passionate about putting the Barkly back on the map and have already initiated the $78.4 million Barkly Regional Deal - the first of its kind in Australia - a 10 year plan that responds to community priorities including social, economic, culture and place-making.
I have listened carefully and understand the issues that matter most to the people in the Barkly. As a former police officer who served in Ali Curung and as the Divisional Superintendent for the Barkly region, I know what’s needed to tackle crime and I am a strong advocate for more housing to keep our children safe, to help get better health outcomes and to assist them to receive a better education.
I understand that small business is the cornerstone of the Territory. I’m focused on growing our economy, restoring the jobs and services cut by the Labor government, reducing crime, protecting our environment, ensuring our communities are safe and healthy, and have access to community infrastructure, housing, education, sport and recreation.
Having worked in a number of leadership roles, including as a Manager of a Special Investigations Unit investigating allegations of child abuse and as a Senior Investigations Officer with the Office of the WorkCover Ombudsman I have the ability to identify solutions to systemic problems, I deliver good governance and have excellent financial management skills.
I have a number of tertiary qualifications including a Master of Public Policy & Administration, Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Management, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Business & Commerce, Bachelor of Policing (Investigations) and a Bachelor of Arts.
I was admitted to the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory as a Legal Practitioner on 9 May 2017. I am a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
As a member of Rotary I regularly volunteer my time to help and support community events. I have served as the President of the Barkly Australian Football League for a period of two years from 2014 to 2015 and I continue my involvement with football as an accredited Umpire and as a member of the AFLNT Barkly Advisory Committee.
On 5 July 2018, I was appointed as Chair of Regional Development Australia Northern Territory, I am the Deputy President of the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT), a Board Member of the Australian Local Government Association and I represent LGANT on the National Local Government Safe Cities Network.
