Born in Alice Springs in 1955, I grew up with red dirt in my veins.
My early life was characterised with exploring the surrounding areas of Alice while playing with my three brothers and attending Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Primary School. My High School years were spent boarding at Rostrevor College in Adelaide, interspersed with holidays back in Central Australia and Elsey Station in the Katherine Region.
In 1972, I began work in the retail sector at the Alice Springs Camera Shop. I found my niche in the industry and bought the business in 1975 and set about establishing my business career - including wholesale companies and multiple retail outlets. I was fortunate enough to represent Kodak Australasia, and the Australian retail market, on the International Photographic Marketing Committee during the 1980’s and 90’s and was awarded the 2000 Australian Photographic Dealer of the Year.
A desire to venture into the tourism industry, led me to leasing Mt Ebenezer road house, followed by Dunmarra road house. These adventures took place in an innovating and exciting period when Yulara was built and Uluru was handed back to the traditional owners.
My wife, Joanne, and I have raised our three daughters here and our family is heavily involved within our community.
I was elected Mayor of Alice Springs in March 2008 and remind myself daily of the privilege I have of representing our community. My advocacy for my home town is fuelled by my passion for the Northern Territory.
I have represented the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) as President since early 2012 and sat as Northern Territory Director of the Australian Local Government Association Ltd (ALGA) since April 2012.
A highlight of my varied experience, includes the role as Commissioner on the Northern Territory Grants Commission (2008-2019). This position enabled me to visit all communities across the Northern Territory. I was the inaugural Chairperson of the Central Australian Health Service (2013-2017). I have strong financial and governance skills, gained through many years in public life.
I am fortunate to have represented a wide cross section of our community on many varied boards. I am passionate about the community of Alice Springs and will continue to work and advocate for all Central Australians.
