Member for Daly
My name is Ian Sloan and I am a 46 years old married father of two. My wife Leah and I have been married for 19 years we have a 16 year old daughter and 14 year old son.
I was born in Northern Ireland and came to Australia as a backpacker in 1995. I arrived in Darwin in 1996 with a group of Irish travellers. Darwin was just meant to be a temporary holiday before moving on to Queensland. However I fell victim to the Territory hospitality and lifestyle. After running out of money I secured a job in the soon to open Shenannigans Irish Pub on Mitchell St.
When my visa expired I realised I did not want to return to Ireland and knew the Territory was the place I wanted to call home. I was sponsored by Sheannigans and remained with the company for almost ten years.
In 2006 my wife and I bought our first business, Virginia Tavern which we operated for two years. In 2011 we took over the Virginia Store which we ran for 6 years before opening the Berry Springs Tavern in 2014. All of these businesses have had their unique challenges and difficulties but with hard work and the right team they have all been successful and this I believe being elected MLA for Daly will be exactly the same.
In all of these ventures we have employed local people and supported local business, community groups and charities. I am passionate about the Territory and want to see the Territory be a great place to live and work for all Territorians.
My motivation to stand for the seat of Daly is to be part of a strong team which can make the Territory a prosperous place for all Territorians and to support and listen to every person in the electorate, understand their concerns and give them a voice in the assembly.
I believe the Territory and the Daly has huge potential to grow and prosper in the future and I hope to continue the great work that Gary Higgins has done over his terms.
