CLP backs $5000 fines for people who spit or cough at frontline workers during COVID-19
The Country Liberal Party has supported the Northern Territory Police Association’s (NTPA) call for fines to be issued to people who intentionally spit or cough at frontline public workers to spread fear about COVID-19, Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said today.
“I call on the Government to give police powers to issue $5000 on the spot fines to anyone engaging in this sort of disgusting behaviour. The penalty should apply to anyone who intentionally spits or coughs at police, paramedics, fire and rescue workers as well as doctors and nurses,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
“NSW has enacted similar enforcement regulations and there’s no reason that the Northern Territory shouldn’t do the same.
“It’s totally unacceptable for people to cough and spit at police and other frontline workers at all, but during the COVID-19 pandemic it is completely unconscionable. Our frontline workers ensure the safety and health of the community and they are applauded for work they do. They shouldn’t have to contend with spitting and coughing designed to intimidate or affect their health.
“A $5000 on the spot fine is a deterrent that should send a strong message that trying to create fear by spitting or coughing at frontline personnel won’t be tolerated by the Territory community.
“The Government should act fast to allow police to enforce this penalty without delay,” Mrs Finocchiaro concluded.
